There is a free buffet in downtown Athens. No, it's not some new restaurant serving samples as a marketing ploy. And it's not some do-gooder group trying to trade their literature for food, either. The come-and-get-it style buffet of pastries, fruit and home-cooked goods is actually put on by a group of students who aren't affiliated with any organization.

New laws were passed this summer in Georgia making it legal for guns to be carried almost everywhere for those who have a gun permit, much to the dismay of law enforcement. However, there is an equally disturbing new trend in addiction on college campuses that is rapidly worsening each year: the abuse of the medication that is created to battle the effects of Attention Deficit Disorder, also known as ADD.

Budget cuts cause crunch on GSC's campuses

Gainesville State College students at Oconee may not yet realize the full impact that the recent six percent budget cut has had on the two campuses. But before the new year these effects with additional cuts will be implemented. In compliance with the budget cut, GSC has had to make reductions that have the potential to affect educational and personal growth among students, faculty and staff on campus.

If you haven't already heard, it's almost Flu Season; run for your lives. We all know those tall tale signs of the flu that catch us off guard every winter as we are going about our busy lives. If you have been unfortunate enough to catch this bug then you are familiar with the experience of having to put everything on hold in order to lay in bed with a blistering fever and a cough which rattles your brain as you pray for relief.

New approach to standardized testing is needed at UGA

Despite the estimated 750 institutions who have established a voluntary approach to standardized testing, there is no sign of UGA adopting a similar plan in the near future. Recently, Wake Forest University of North Carolina and Smith College of Massachusetts announced they will no longer require prospective students to submit SAT or ACT scores as a part of their applications.

Final stand of the bees

Think of the ingredients in a hamburger from McDonald's. In a world without honey bees, all that is left is the bun. As our main source for crop pollination, honey bees are responsible for more than $9 million worth of the food that Americans consume. But the honey bees are disappearing and no one knows why.
