The GSC student magazine, the Chestatee Review, opens the door for many students who wish to publish their poems, creative writings and art works. But this magazine also allows those who would like to work behind the scenes on a magazine to gain experience for the future.
Alex Johns, head advisor of the Chestatee Review, explained that the main purpose of the magazine is "to feature outstanding works of students at GSC."
Even though the magazine is distributed to show these works to a larger audience, Johns said that the work that goes on behind the scene of the magazine is just as important as the material that goes into the magazine. The experience that the magazine staff receives provides them with a greater advantage of becoming a publisher or an editor.
The student works that are published in the Chestatee Review are submitted by the students themselves, by professors at GSC or through contests. As these students' works are submitted to the magazine, the staff of the magazine is constantly working together to make the best decisions on what should be published and what isn't going to make the cut.
The staff members not only make decisions on what is going to be in the magazine, but they also have to put all the student works together in a format that makes sense. "Working for Chestatee gives students a sense of what it's like to work for a publication" Johns said. "Learn to arrive at a decision by a certain time."
The advantage of the Chestatee Review is that it allows student works to be seen by a larger audience and it is even sent to national contests. The staff of the magazine is not normally recognized by these contests, but they do gain significant experience that will be recognized by businesses when it is explained on a resume.
