Vote early while you can
Benjamin Wills
Issue date: 10/23/08 Section: Election '08
The youth (18-25) demographic has too many reasons to not vote. We have class, work, and vibrant social lives. Often we forget what day it is, we can't get home on Tuesday to vote for some reason or another, a great example of that being that driving anywhere over an hour to get to a hometown elementary school gymnasium is unrealistic and too expensive. Some of our reasons aren't very good but they still keep us from voting. Regardless of the reasons, less than half of our demographic is expected to participate in the upcoming Presidential Election.
I would like to believe that 100% of the youth will make it out this fall, but, I know that is unrealistic. I am urging that we come out in stronger numbers, and that we put away any sorry excuses for not participating directly in our political structure.
For anyone who has yet to register to vote, you are too late. For everyone else, we have options.
Early voting was essentially designed for students. We have class, work, etc, but now the state is allowing us to vote early (the entire week before the election). I hope that as a group, we can do the minimal amount of planning necessary to find twenty minutes in one week to participate. If you do end up taking advantage of this, it wouldn't hurt to ask your roommate if they want to tag along.
Early voting will be taking place in downtown Athens starting on October 27th and ending on October 31st. You don't have to worry about where your precinct is, you just have one centralized location that everyone will use. November 4th will be a day of long lines. Early voting allows you to walk in, vote and leave. It's perfect. The Athens County Board of Elections is located on 151 E. Washington St (downtown, next the Copper Creek and the police station) as well as at the Classic Center (300 N. Thomas St). A photo ID will be required.
For anyone who is registered at home, you can look up your early voting center or your November 4th precinct on the Georgia, Secretary of States website. (http://www.sos.georgia.gov)
Early voting is a great idea for any of you who are worried you might run into some unforeseen circumstance on Election Day that would hinder you from getting to the polls. Oh, and one more thing- I would also like to remind anyone who is planning on taking advantage of early voting, that it's scheduled for the same week of the Georgia/ Florida game, so plan efficiently if you somehow have a brother or friend that somehow scored you a ticket.
