Chills run down your spine. Sweat beads along your hairline. Your pulse quickens faster, faster, faster--with each passing second. You quietly anticipate the inevitable. And just as your guard is let down, you hear it. The cranking of a chainsaw. The shriek of an innocent bystander. The demonic witches cackle.
"Boo!" And you are reminded once again why it is you love haunted houses. Plain and simple.
Fear.
We all love a good adrenaline rush and the best way to do so is a good scare. The month of October is one packed with thrills and chills. But if you're new to the area or if you're just plain tired of the regular "pony ride" haunted house then it's easy to miss the few great haunted houses in the area.
If you're looking for a good fright night in the area then the best you can find would be at the haunting extravaganza "Night of Screams" located across from the mall on Atlanta Highway. Given the location many are unsure if this haunted house is worth the money. "I thought it was a lot better than I ever expected it to be," said Kara Bowman, a UGA student. It offers three equally petrifying attractions guaranteed to never leave you bored. A ticket at "Night of Screams" costs but a mere ten dollars. Lines for the haunted house average around 30 minutes, depending on the time of month you choose to go. "Night of Screams" opened the fifth of October and is open until the first of November.
On a local front, if a little extra scare is what you're interested in. Then the "Birthday Cake House" on Milledge Avenue is the place for you. This sorority house is said to get it's name simply from the shape the house takes--as a birthday cake. Many believe that you can still sense her presence around the house. This house is a private sorority home and before ever approaching, make sure you have the proper permission. You can read more about this and other local haunts in the Haunted Sorority Houses story located on this same page.
Some of the best haunted houses you can go to are located outside of the Athens area. In Kennesaw there is a well-known disturbing haunted house called "13 Stories" which takes you through 13 floors of spinning tunnels, creatures from your nightmares and falling walls. "13 Stories" opened up October 7th and stays open until November 1st. "13 Stories" costs a slight 16 dollars. If you're willing to make the trip and spend the extra money this attraction is worth every penny and beyond.
Another well-known haunted house in the state of Georgia is the haunted house "Netherworld." This haunted house has been featured in many magazines, websites, and television shows as one of the best haunted houses our nation has to offer. For the main event, "Carnivore" tickets are a simple 18 dollars. For both "Carnivore" and "Mangler" tickets are a cheap 25 dollars. "Netherworld" is hauntingly located in Norcross, Georgia, about an hour drive from Athens. "Netherworld" opened October 3rd and is open until November 2nd.
So no matter where you live or what your budget, don't fret this Halloween. You can still get the pants scared off of you. For more listings of haunted houses visit www.findhauntedhouses.com.
