With October in full swing and the countdown 'til Halloween pushing forward, ghost stories are becoming more and more frequently heard. Everyone wants the scariest story to share, but one cannot beat the ghost stories passed down from the generations of girls living in two sorority houses on the University of Georgia campus.

Alpha Gamma Delta, found on the corner of Milledge and Baxter has quite a unique story to tell behind its doors. Susie Caruthers, a daughter of the once residents of the house is said to have hung herself in the attic after being stood up at the altar. Making the story more surreal is the fact that the house is said to resemble a three-tiered wedding cake. Sightings of Susie in the attic window are still said to be seen today.

Just down the road on Milledge, heading towards Broad Street sits Phi Mu on the left. Year after year, girls living in the house claim incidents of mysterious crying coming from the top of the staircase. One group of sisters living in the house years ago pulled out a Ouija board in efforts to help solve the mystery and found the sound of the crying belonged to a girl named Anna Hamilton. Subsequent research found that an Anna Hamilton did in fact live in the house and her story revealed the gruesome tale of how the killing of her fiancé happened before her very eyes and how his body was then buried beneath the steps of the house.

No one knows the truth of any ghost story, but the legend of the Alpha Gamma Delta and Phi Mu houses have been passed down to the new girls living in each house year after year. If the opportunity arises, take a drive down Milledge Avenue and see if the ghost of Susie Caruthers can be seen in the attic window still waiting for redemption, or if you can hear Anna Hamilton's voice still mourning over her murdered fiancé. You never know, you just might start a ghost story of your own: Halloween holds many surprises.
