Too much football...gone fishing.

There is more to the fall season than just football, you know.

Sure, we live in the south and in a town where it seems every weekend is revolved around one three to four hour period that we spend all week preparing for. Then along comes Saturday and it's an all day event.

To be quite honest, I'm kind of ready for a midseason break or two. Don't gasp. I'm not talking about a bye week, either. Personally, I need to do something else for once and just catch the game on radio or television instead and remember I'm more than an obnoxious Bulldog fan. I think it's time to get out in the woods or go fishing.

So that's what I'll do. I'll go fishing.

The Georgia-Vanderbilt game is UGA's homecoming game. Vandy has shocked the world with its undefeated start and could possibly be ranked inside the top ten when they square off between the hedges. The game, pending a Georgia thrashing of Tennessee, should be a big time SEC matchup with serious hype. I'm just going to give my ticket away, turn the radio on and go fishing. Crazy, huh?

Well, there are definitely a few screws loose in my head when it comes to bass fishing, my favorite sport. I've fished in tournaments since I was 14 years young and can't seem to let it go. Friends complain they don't ever see me during the spring and they're right.

The fall is usually a break for me, a seasonal hiatus I take from fishing every year mainly because of football season. But an opportunity presented itself that I couldn't pass up, even if it was the Georgia-Florida weekend.

I've been on a waiting list since March to fish the B.A.S.S. Southern Open event at Lake Guntersville in northeast Alabama. The call came a week ago, so my plans changed instantly.

It's an opportunity to learn from the world's best as there will be plenty of top professionals competing. I'm participating as a co-angler, or non-boater. This means I am fishing from the back of a pro's boat and competing against only the other co-anglers in the three day event. The main goal for an aspiring amateur like me is to come away having learned lessons of technique, procedure, and practice.

Of course, there is more incentive than just learning. Since this is the biggest event I will have ever taken part in, the prize will be the biggest as well. If magic happens and I somehow finish ahead of the other 199 competitors, I would get to drag home a brand new $32,000 boat package. What if? Well it's fun to think about, anyway.

So yeah, I think I'll take a weekend off. I think the Bulldog Nation can root 'em on without me for one game. Go dawgs. Glory, glory to old Georgia. I'll miss my red and black family, but remember the screws? They definitely become looser when I'm catching those little green fish.
